What Is a Non-Performing Loan (NPL)?

A non-performing loan (NPL) is a loan in which the borrower is in default due to not making the scheduled payments for a specified period. Although the exact elements of non-performing status can vary depending on a specific loan’s terms, “no payment” is usually defined as zero payments of either principal or interest. The specified period also varies, depending on the industry and the type of loan. For example, in banking, commercial loans are considered non-performing if the borrower is 90 days past due. Some banks/institutes opt to sell NPLs to other banks or investors to free up capital and/or focus on performing loans that bring in income.

How NPL Investment creates a win-win situation

NPLs are of course a big challenge for the borrower and can mean a lot of lost income alongside large fees and resources to pursue the cases with debt collection etc.

This challenge has another solution and that is to sell the loans to a performer who can focus on the recovery. For the recovery performer with expertise, this is an investment as they can buy stocks of NPL and then gain profit when the loans are recovered.

Thus a win-win situation is created, with borrowers able to sell their loans and investors able to make profits on the sale.
